Michael Gibbs is a freelance illustrator whose clients include magazines such as Newsweek, Worth Magazine, Consumer Reports, The Washington Post Magazine, Harvard Business Review, Diablo, and Chicago's NorthShore magazine, corporations such as United Airlines, Verizon, IBM, Sears, Cisco, American Airlines, CitiGroup and Oracle; institutions including Johns Hopkins, the IMF, BET, American University, and World Bank; publishers like Dell Books, TOR Books, Ziff-Davis and Random House; newspapers including The Washington Post, The Hartford Courant, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Bermuda Royal Gazette, and associations such as the American Federation of Teachers, ULLICO, American Society of Industrial Security, The American Bankers Association, and many others.
He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, Spectrum, Print, American Illustration, The Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington, The Art Directors Club of New Jersey, The Illustrators Club of Washington, and others. His work has also been featured in books on illustration and design skills, including Information Graphics and Visual Clues [Rockport Press] and Step-by-Step Graphics.
He is a member of the Illustrators Club of Washington, and serves on its Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Illustrators Partnership of America, the Graphic Artists Guild, and the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington.
He was a juror in the recent 42nd Society of Illustrators exhibition, joining 8 other illustrators and designers in judging the advertising illustration category. Recently, he shared his insights into the art and the business of illustration with junior and senior illustration majors at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, in a series titled "Conversations With Illustrators."
In addition to the Society of Illustrators gallery in New York, his work has been exhibited in the Society's annual travelling show, and at the University of Maryland, James Madison University, Montgomery College, Northern Virginia College, and in juried group exhibitions at the Sumner School Museum, the Corcoran Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Washington, and the Design Center in Washington, DC.
